Bringing a classic feel to a modern home with Mireia Semis
Interior designer Mireia Semis was charged with bringing a traditional interior scheme to this Madrid house, designed by the famous modernist architect Rafael de La-Hoz.

‘The house is an absolutely contemporary design, with pure lines, exposed concrete, large windows, and a visual language that’s forceful,’ she explains.
‘We didn't want to erase that architecture, but rather to integrate it into a project that's much more classic inside. That's been the big challenge.’
Many people taking on such a distinctive property might look to accentuate the architecture, but the owners here had a different vision.
‘My clients were looking for a more classic house; with a taste that’s less minimalist. Because of this, the work has been fundamentally based on merging those two concepts.
‘The family desired a house with a classic style, with quality materials such as crafted woodwork, with strong textiles and wallpapers.
‘We needed to do that without losing the modernity that we mentioned before, recovering elements that already existed.
‘One of those elements was the red colour of the exterior woodwork, that wine red, which we have introduced across our entire project, and which has served as an inspiration from the beginning.’
Another way of adding cohesion to the project was through the details.
‘As the main connecting thread, we have brass, which is present throughout the house,’ says Mireia. ‘I was very clear from the beginning that the choice of metals was going to be the backbone of my project.
‘That's why I chose Corston, because it gave me everything I wanted. With Corston I have light fixtures, hardware, switches, all in the same finish, and all carefully crafted with great quality.
‘I chose antique brass because it’s a material whose ageing excites me. It’s a quality material that fits perfectly in both a more modern environment as well as something more classic, which was one of the challenges we've had throughout this project.’
